FMST 320 - Post War European Film History and Theory This course is an introduction to the methods, concepts, movements, and reception of European cinema from 1945 to the present. Selectively surveying the history and theory of Western, Central, and Eastern European filmmaking, the course juxtaposes the close study of narrative and film form with theoretical texts. From neorealism to the transnational in film, from the postcolonial to double occupancies, lessons emphasize the historic hybridity of commercial and experimental film in Europe and complicate auteurist approaches to European film culture. The postwar thematic motifs which continually surface in European film’s changing social and aesthetic landscape (marginality, desire, and the metropolis) is a focal point of discussion and reflection.
