BIOL 316 - Bioinformatics Recent developments in biological data collection have led to the creation of large-scale experimental data sets of DNA and protein sequences and structures of biological molecules. These data are available for public use from an array of databases, and their analysis is intriguing. This course provides an introduction to the use of computational methods and tools to extract useful information from these large datasets, and focuses on interpreting this expanding biological information. Students discuss the basics of bioinformatics and focus on the identification and characterization of functional elements from protein and DNA sequences. Students also learn to use public databases and web-based sequence analysis tools, focusing primarily on human genome data.
