ENGL 306 - Antebellum American Literature
A study of American literature in the context of society and culture in the United States from 1830 to the end of the Civil War in 1865, with special emphasis on the impact of the anti-slavery, utopian, and women’s rights movements. The diverse readings include works by Frederick Douglass, Ralph Waldo Emerson, Fanny Fern, Margaret Fuller, Nathaniel Hawthorne, Harriet Jacobs, Herman Melville, Harriet Beecher Stowe, Henry Thoreau, and Walt Whitman.
