Provides a survey of Western thought about the natural world from the work of ancient philosophers to the work of Isaac Newton. Topics covered include the differences between science and natural philosophy; the role of Plato and Aristotle in the development of Western European natural philosophy; intersections between natural philosophy and technology in ancient Rome and medieval Europe; the growth of the university as a center of natural philosophical study; the role of Atlantic explorations in the development of science; the new cosmologies of the early modern period; and the growth of science, scientific culture, and experimental method.
