HIST 385 - Darfur in Historical Perspective (AF) Examines the history of the Darfur crisis. Topics include the people of Darfur, ethnic relations and conflicts, conquest and colonial legacy, Darfur and the Sudan government, the rebels, responses of the Sudan government and Janjaweed, the war, human rights violations, foreign powers, the challenge of humanitarian intervention, and the future of Darfur. Students explore the responsibilities and opportunities we have, as individuals and as a nation, to respond to the refugee migrations, human rights abuses, and genocides that haunted the 20th century and that are beginning to plague the 21st. Exposes students to historical causes of the crisis and some of the humanitarian challenges facing the world today. Also offers multiple frameworks for thinking about what roles we might play in influencing public policy and having an impact on people in need. Students learn to understand and analyze the crisis that the United Nations called “the world’s worst humanitarian disaster” and the United States called “genocide.” (AF)
