ITAL 226 - Venice and Italy (Study Group) Enduring for more than a thousand years, the Venetian Republic was one of the longest-lasting political entities in Europe. During its prime, it was the dominant naval and economic power in the eastern Mediterranean, and the major conduit for goods and ideas between the Muslim world and Western Christendom. This course traces the rise and fall of this remarkable maritime empire, its relation to the rest of Italy, and its lasting cultural contributions.
