ANTH 316 - Religion, Culture, and Media Explores the media practices through which people create and negotiate religious value and meaning. It takes as its starting premise the idea that all religious activity is mediated as well as sensual and that, through anthropological theories of religion, culture, and media, one can gain insight into religions’ growing political power today. The course involves active participant observation of ritual performances and media as well as substantial engagement with theoretical questions anthropologists have posed about religion, ritual, and media over the last century.
