ARTH 226 - Nature’s Order: Baroque Arts 1550-1750 European painting and sculpture ca. 1550-1750 in its cultural, political, and social settings. Themes include the impact of the Counter-Reformation on the visual arts; Caravaggio and international Caravaggism; “realism” and “verisimilitude”; the intersection of mysticism, spirituality, and art; art and science; art and optics; theatricality; art as propaganda; intersections between visual arts and architecture.
