MUSI 161 - History of Jazz (H&A)

A study of  jazz from its roots in 19th-century Black American music to the present, through readings, intensive study of recordings, and class lectures. Students are introduced to the major style periods of jazz including swing, bebop, and fusion, as well as a critical understanding of how such histories are developed. Creative projects give students the opportunity to engage with the music hands-on, while other assignments guide students through the process of research in the humanities. Important composers, bands, and soloists are highlighted, including Louis Armstrong, Duke Ellington, Charlie Parker, John Coltrane, and the Miles Davis groups. (H&A)
