RELG 217 - African American Religious Experience An introduction to the complex, expansive religious landscape of African American life from the transatlantic slave trade to the contemporary moment. Through an examination of specific traditions, including conjure and other folk religious practices, Black churches, the Nation of Islam, and the emergence of Black, Womanist, and Black Feminist theologies, students gain an understanding of the historical, theological, and aesthetic dimensions that make African American religions distinct. Students also consider how these traditions define broader concepts, such as death, the body, and the natural environment.
