HIST 214 - American Cultural and Intellectual History (US)

This course surveys some of the most important conversations in the history of the United States. It explores: America’s providential destiny, slavery, and the roots of “liberty;” the problem of maintaining a democratic society built on the wealth and inequality generated by capitalism; the making of a modern nation and the nature of nations; the multiplication of “experts” ready to help us live our increasingly bureaucratized lives; and late 20th-century debates about justice and identity.
