ARTS 238 - Transatlantic Avant-Gardes: 1880-1920 Offers a critical and historical examination of the artistic exchanges across the Atlantic — between North America, South America, Europe, and Africa — from 1880 to 1920. Students examine how modern art transformed in reaction and response to radical technological, social, and political change, addressing how industrialization, political and sexual revolution, rapid urban growth, and an expanding consumer culture defined a wide range of visual culture. Students examine painting, drawing, and sculpture alongside the newer media of photography, assemblage, film, and collage.
