RELG 244 - African American Religious Experience Explores the complex, expansive religious landscape of African American life from the transatlantic slave trade to the contemporary moment. Through an examination of specific traditions, including African indigenous religious practices, Black churches, the Nation of Islam, and the emergence of Black, Womanist, and Black Feminist theologies, students gain an understanding of the historical, theological, and aesthetic dimensions that make African American religious experiences distinct. Students also consider how these experiences chart alternative ideas of broader concepts, such as God, death, gender, sexuality, and the body.
