CHEM 440 - Materials Chemistry This half-semester course builds on the foundational background of solid materials from general and inorganic chemistry with a thorough description of the structure and properties of extended solids, surfaces, and nano-materials. Students cover synthetic and physical techniques used to prepare and characterize solids and the properties that make solid materials useful. Students consider the bonding and electronic, magnetic, and optical properties of solids in detail. Students focus on materials with significant societal importance, including materials for renewable energy, energy storage, and for creating a sustainable society.
