CHEM 456 - Bioinorganic Chemistry

This half-semester course provides an introduction to the field of bioinorganic chemistry, a discipline at the interface of chemistry and biology. Topics and theoretical principles from coordination chemistry are applied to the study of metallo-enzymes and other systems involving metal ions. Emphasis is placed on mechanisms and structures in which metals play an essential role. Biological oxidation, nitrogen fixation, photosynthesis, DNA-metal complexes, and organomercury compounds are some of the examples that may be considered.
