ALST 232 - Latin American Modern and Contemporary Art Examines modern and contemporary art and visual culture in Latin America within the context of diasporic experience, transnational migration, Indigeneity, and the ongoing legacies of colonialism. Students consider a wide variety of media, including films, graphic arts, texts, and exhibitions with an eye toward the local and global events and sociopolitical structures that prompted their production–especially waves of colonial independence, Pan-Americanism, World War II, the cultural policies of the Cold War, and the rise of authoritarian political regimes. Course readings, in-class discussions, and assignments explore the various ways in which artists and artistic practice have defined, resisted, and shaped the idea of Latin America. Students probe the construction of “Latin American art” by adopting a hemispheric and transatlantic lens, exploring the circulation of artists, ideas, and objects and their framing in key exhibitions and institutional collections.
