ALST 209 - Family Ties Examines representations of African, African diasporic, and Latin American family structures and the role of the family as means of survival against systemic oppressions. Through the study of contemporary literature, film, and other media students analyze how each of these communities conceptualize family, the stifling or protective roles that patriarchal models of family play in different societies, and unconventional family structures that emerge when family relations enhance, instead of assuage, the damaging effects of racism, misogyny, and queerphobia for its members.
