Examines the development of American foreign relations from the Declaration of Independence to the entry of the United States into World War I. Considers the emergence of competing ideas about the place of the United States in the world in the 18th, 19th, and 20th centuries, and such subjects as the formation of early American foreign policy, tensions with Europe, westward expansion and the war with Mexico, the growth of American economic power, and the rise of U.S. imperialism.
