ARTS 357 - Storytelling Without Words Explores a wide range of ways in which sculpture can tell stories without using words – as one moment or many, with single or repeated figures moving through the imagined space of a relief or the actual space of the viewer, leading visitors around and through buildings, teaching and confounding, enlightening and transforming. Starting with sculptures from India/South Asia on Buddhist stupas and Hindu temples, the course will branch out to consider paintings from the Tale of Genji from Japan, sculptural reliefs on Trajan’s Column from ancient Rome, and other visual narratives around the globe.
